Gotham – The TV Show We Do Not Need Nor Deserve

So, anyone that knows me knows I LOVE Batman and the DC Universe and very rarely do I have a negative thing to say about anything Batman related.  Aside from my major disappointment with Arkham Knight and the abominations that were the Schumacher flicks I have nothing but love for the variety of story arcs and depictions of my beloved childhood hero.  Yet I find myself struggling with Gotham.  I tried so hard to like it.  I WANTED to like it but the spoon-feeding of references and cheesiness is reminiscent of the classic TV show and that ship sailed decades ago.

I initially envisioned a Gotham that was dark, gritty and needed cleaning up.  Season 1 had me thinking that was the case and I defended the show as I so desperately wanted it to be what I thought it would become.  But then the villains started happening.  A new villain every episode with every single hint of who they are spelt out in blazing neon.  Unlike DC’s other efforts over on CW where Flash and Arrow intelligently give newcomers a treat yet don’t alienate the diehard fans with boring references and big arrows pointing at who this newcomer on screen is.

I thought this show would centre on Jim Gordon and his battle to clean up Gotham without getting too dirty himself.  I pictured a young, grieving Bruce Wayne trying to find his way in life and finding a means to overcome the loss and emptiness the demise of his parents brings him.  I pictured a gritty CSI Gotham with subtle references and indications of villains’ origins through well written stories and cameos.  I pictured a tightly woven pre-Batman world that would hold gems for fans and newcomers alike.

I was wrong.  I still watch it.  I don’t know why.  Perhaps I cling to the hope a new writing team and/or show runner comes in as the offscreen Jim Gordon to clean this mess up.  Every time a new villain casting is announce I die a little inside and the calamity grows.  I really enjoyed the Court of Owls run in the comics and, season 2 brought us a link to that arc and I am displeased with how it has played thus far.  The Order of St Dumas came into play, Edward Nygma’s license plate is “RIDDLR”, Penguin’s bizarre and annoying mother…so many let downs that I lose respect for villains I respected and loved in the comics and other media.

Season 1 was the closest we got to what I expected; the (short-lived) turf wars between Falcone and Maroni (and the wretched Fish Mooney that was not required at all).  It was all down hill from there.   Just look at little Bruce, not at all consumed by his parents’ death as he should be.  This is the defining moment in this child’s life and he’s acting more like what a young Alan Sugar would as opposed to the heir to millions who was face to face with his parents’ killer and, who was technically responsible for their death.

The freaks in masks shouldn’t appear until Batman does – the age old argument, is Batman friend or foe and do we need him?  If Batman wasn’t around, would the lunatics have come out of the woodwork?

I watch Flash and Arrow and every time Cisco drops a name reference or every time you see the likes of a pilot’s jacket with the name ‘JORDAN’ with no major focus or reference to it I get giddy and the fanboy gets excited.  I watch Gotham where everything is spoon-fed to the viewer and I yawn and feel no excitement for the next episode.  Perhaps we did need a Gotham TV series.  Just not right now.

Nerdful Things 04/07/15

Welcome to this week’s Nerdful Things!  I’m going to break stride for a sec and congratulate the winner of the 1,000 likes competition for the awesome Play Arts Kai Harley Quinn Variant.   So, congratulations goes to Shona aka Ellie Jayden!  It feels good to offer up some awesomeness but especially when the person shows true appreciation – her Twitter reaction says it all.  As disappointed as I was with the small number of entries, I am glad I had people put some effort in as a prize like this should go to someone who makes an effort and not just a lazy like, share and that’s it.  Below is the winning entry:

I really want that Joker doll…

Before I delve into some of the awesomeness available, I also wanted to announce the integration of a new scheme on the store: certain pre-order items will have discounts applied within a certain window of time before they revert to the regular price.  To qualify for the discount, all you have to do is order within that time – the price will show as discounted on the respective product page/in your cart/at checkout.  Simple.  Bear in mind that this is not on ALL pre-orders and the window of time may be a few days to a week or two so if you want to save a little bit of cash then get in there quick!

So, that being said, here is the first (and only item at the time of writing this) item available at a discounted price.  This GITD Vaultboy from the newly announce Fallout series from Funko!  This guy has clearly been hanging out with The Glowing One.  Or he’s been wandering around the Wasteland without the correct gear and has a stupidly high RAD reading.

Next up, we have the American Horror Story: Freakshow POP!s.   I posted a RUSH ORDER towards the end of last week and a lot of the items are (thankfully) still available to order in, including this series.  Elsa Mars & Ma Petite seem especially popular (4 times more than any of the others)!  Also available are: Bette & Dot (Tattler Twins), Pepper & Twisty The Clown.

How awesome are these newly announced Doctor Who POP!s?

4th Doctor with Jelly Beans

11th Doctor with Fez & Mop

12th Doctor with Spoon

And finally, here is the last of my picks – the Star Wars Jawa re-release!

That’s just a taster of some of the goodies added this week.  For more, check the store homepage.

A number of items have dropped in with my supplier and I need to get confirmed numbers into them by Friday.  Listed below are the items and they range from Marvel Exclusives to Gold Smaug!

Nerdful Things 05/06/15

I’m going to try and mix it up for this weeks iteration of Nerdful Things.  Last week was predominantly DC products!  Last week saw a huge interest in the Hello Kitty DC plush dolls…especially from international buyers!

Now the first item isn’t a new addition but it’s had quite a hefty price drop so, in true ICYMI style, here is the awesome pink teddy bear from Breaking Bad.

Next, we have a range of new Adventure Time and Disney Funko POP! Keychains and Tins!

Now, I did try, but back onto Batman (as I’ve been piecing this post together – I am writing this section on 1 June – I had this drop into my inbox), this fantastic Jim Lee pencil art figure for SDCC 2015 is available to pre-order!

On top of the glorious Fallout 4 announcement from Bethesda, Funko announced the Fallout and Elder Scrolls POP! ranges.  I won’t go into detail here as I have recently put up a separate post about it here.

Now, this news I was super excited about – a supplier contacted me in regards to LEGO Dimensions and I am proud to be able to bring you the various Starter Packs and add-ons available for pre-order.  As a pre-order bonus, the Starter Packs have £5 off until midnight 28 September.

In follow up to the LEGO Dimensions news, I have also sourced a supplier that can provide LEGO sets so keep your eyes peeled for more sets and other LEGO related items here.

Similar to LEGO, I have also added the Walking Dead Construction sets for pre-order.  Set for release later this month, these sets allow you to recreate some of your favourite scenes from the smash TV show such as the prison and the Governor’s room.

Last but not least, the Avengers: Age of Ultron Cosbaby range has been added.  Pictured above is the set which includes an exclusive unmasked Tony Stark figure.  The other figures are available to purchase separately.

There have been a lot of other additions this week including some new Disney Funko POP!s so head on over to the store and have a look!

Lego Dimensions

Good morning (or whatever part of the day it is that you’re reading this)!

I had an e-mail towards the end of last week and decided to share some awesome news.  A distributor has reached out to me to offer me the opportunity of jumping on the “toys to life” craze.  And, I must admit, Skylanders has never really taken me.  Disney Infinity was tempting but the different versions etc. seems confusing for the consumer and when I heard of Dimensions, I was keen for me personally as I love Lego and the possibilities that it may offer really captured my imagination (tie that in with the announcement of Lego releasing a game akin to Minecraft and it’s a case of ‘mind = blown’).

Below are details taken from the Lego Dimensions fact sheet that I have been supplied and I will be looking to add the various sets to the store very soon.  In the meantime, check out the deets below!

Nerdful Things: SDCC 2015 DST Previews

Can you believe it?  It’s almost that time again!  SDCC 2014 ushered in  a smorgasbord of awesome products and announcements (remember the leaked Batman V Superman trailer?).  San Diego Comic Con has evolved into an unstoppable monster and is any merchandise manufacturer’s wet dream.  In fact, SDCC has become so big, its dates should form an international holiday weekend!

What’s funny is, when I saw some of the Diamond Select announcements for this years SDCC, I thought to myself “Hmmm, they’re quite pre-emptive, it’s too soon”.  That was last week.  Then I realised, its only a few weeks away!  Where has this year gone?

I figured, on the run up to the main event, I would share some of my favourite announcements in terms of product lines and highlight some of the SDCC 2015 exclusives.

Here are my picks thus far:

  1. DC Comics BlueLine Edition Action Figure Batman by Jim Lee SDCC 2015 Exclusive

Legendary comics artist Jim Lee has brought his extraordinary vision of Batman to epic stories including BATMAN: HUSH and BATMAN: FOR TOMORROW. Now, that vision of the Dark Knight is brought to life once more in the new DC COMICS BLUELINE EDITION—BATMAN BY JIM LEE ACTION FIGURE.Based on designs by Jim Lee, this spectacular action figure captures the feel of the artwork that appears on the packaging. Limited Edition!

Note: There is also an extremely limited version of the DC Comics Blueline Edition Batman Exclusive Action Figure, which include a signed unique original sketch by Jim Lee. Limited to 150 pieces.

Jim Lee’s artwork has always fascinated me and hearing some of his stories on Fatman on Batman was an eye opener.  This is a piece I want for myself and I’ve already had a few folks pre-order him!

163950_713885_11[1]2.   Femme Fatales Harley B&W PVC Statue

A Diamond Select Toys Release! DST is celebrating the Femme Fatales of Batman: The Animated Series with a line of statues, and Comic-Con kicks the line off with an exclusive variant version of Harley Quinn! Based on her appearance in the episode “Almost Got ’Im,” this statue captures the Joker’s partner-in-crime defacing the Bat-signal in two of her favorite colors: black and white! This 9-inch black-and-white statue is crafted from PVC plastic, and comes packaged in a full-color window box. Sculpted by Steve Varner Studios. Limited to only 4,000 pieces!

Everyone loves Harley and the B&W statues are a fantastic range so this is an awesome addition to the line-up.  I’m hoping to have access to this item but no details as of yet – stay tuned!

  1.   Kevin Smith Vinimate Vinyl Figure – SDCC 2015 EDITION

A Diamond Select Toys release! It’s an all-new line of vinyl figures from DST! Vinimates, the first-ever Minimates-style vinyl figures based on pop-culture icons, are making their debut at Comic-Con, and who better to get Vinimated first than comic book icon Kevin Smith? A comic writer, comic-shop owner and unabashed geek, Kevin Smith will be the first static, 4-inch Vinimate in the “Podcast Pals” series of Vinimates, featuring some of the biggest celebrities SmodCo has to offer. Holding a microphone and wearing his trademark “Puck U” hockey jersey, Kevin comes packaged in a full-color window box. The Vinimates phenomenon starts here! Limited to only 2,000 pieces!

Again, no details on whether I will have access to this or not but this is definitely on my personal wishlist.  After all, as most folks know, it’s thanks to this guy that I started Nerdgazzum in the first place [see ‘Thank You Mr Kevin Smith‘]!

Stay tuned for further updates!

Deathstroke – The Fatal Blow

It’s some kind of cosmic joke, really.  I was updating this weeks Nerdful Things post (due out at the end of the week) with the newly announced  SDCC 2015 Jim Lee pencil Batman figure  and I thought to myself, “some folks will think I have some cheek announcing THIS years SDCC items and they’re still waiting on items from LAST year!”

And then, I got the e-mail.  The SDCC 2014 Unmasked Deathstroke POP! Vinyl (that I have been taking a lot of flak for due to it being so delayed and handling, at times, some really irate and rude individuals) cannot be supplied.  This is after being assured that my order would be fine a short while ago.

Highly disappointing as some folks have been waiting a very long time and, in a few cases, have had other items held back pending it’s inclusion in their shipment.  Thankfully, most people have been admirably patient and understanding and will be utterly disappointed with the news.

So what happens now?  Well, I will be going through all the affected orders as and when I can and e-mailing affected individuals.  Shipments being held that can be released based on this news will be shipped as soon as possible.

As for refunds, I will say it here as well as in the e-mails, if you locate your transaction on PayPal (if applicable) and you will have an option to say you have not received your items and open a case (provided your order isn’t older than 6 months).  If you are having diffuclty with this, please check the support section on PayPal. Once I have been notified of the case being opened I will respond as soon as I can and have the refund arranged.

If your order has only been partially affected, then I can either send a partial refund or you are free to choose another item of the same value from the store to replace it.  You can, of course, choose an item of greater value and pay the difference – email me at with your details and what you wish to do.  This is only if part of your order is affected.

If your order was placed over 6 months ago, then please email me at with details of this and if you would like to choose another item as outlined above, then please mention this also.

I hate the fact that this has happened, I have never had a situation like this before and whilst a few people have gotten rather frustrated over this; no one has been more frustrated than myself.  But, the best way to deal with this situation is be as open and honest as possible – especially as a relatively new business to the game.  There will always be problems but it’s how it’s handled that matters.

I only wish that I had known this sooner (much sooner) but I want to thank you very much for your time and understanding.

1,000 Likes Competition – The 411

[powr-countdown-timer label=”Enter a Label”]

Hello again folks!

After a lot of thought and consideration, I toyed with a number of ideas for ways in which to win this awesome Play Arts Kai Harley Quinn figure.

I thought of doing a Bonus Ball draw based on an upcoming Lotto draw – pay £1 per number.  Good, randomised way of doing it but it limits the competition to a maximum of 49 folks.  Plus, it’s not really a fitting way of putting this fantastic piece up for grabs!

The typical competition apps that are out there suck, to be fair.  It’s all well and good getting folks to like and share something – I mean, how may times have you hit like just for the sake of it and never gone back to the page or whatever again?

And, thanks to a mini brain-storming session some other ideas milling about in this floundering mind rose to the surface triumphant!

So, it seems only right that this lovable rogue receives your love to decide the ultimate winner.  It’s time to get your creative caps on and show how much you love her!

Entries can include any form of creativity – a drawing, a poem, short story, vlog, song, love letter (don’t creep us out too much)…anything that you feel conveys how badly you want this figure in a non creepy, pure fun kinda way.  Entries have to be unique (no Google images or similar means of cheating) – you have to personalise your work to show that it wasn’t ripped off of someone else so your name needs to be clearly on any written/drawn works as well as the hashtag #Nerdgazzum.  Any video pieces should be pretty obvious that you are who you are.  Any audio sent in needs to have your name mentioned either at the start or the end of your piece.

I know that sounds like a lot of work, but Harley Quinn doesn’t just give herself to anyone, puddin’.

The competition is open as soon as this post has been published and closes at midnight on June 30th so you have an entire month to hone your craft.

Eligible entries will then be assigned an entry number (any ineligible entries will be rejected).  After the cut-off date the entry numbers will be put into to decide the winner!

Any written or drawn entries can be sent in via the Facebook Page, Instagram or Twitter.

Audio/video submissions can be done via Youtube or any other audio/video site and send the link and details of your entry in a message on either the Facebook Page or Twitter.

The competition is open to all locations however, if an entrant outside of the UK wins, they will be liable for postage costs at the rate of International Signed For via Royal Mail.

Good luck, everyone!  I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with!!
